A Thankless Task: Part III — The President and his Party

The president does himself a huge disservice by attempting to transcend the fray of American politics, to rise above the factious system Madison loosed upon us, rather than mastering it from within. History has shown that the quest for unity, however well-intentioned, is not practical politics in the land of the free. It is a rhetorical strategy only. To attempt to translate it into action is to produce paralysis and, ultimately, political embarrassment.
